Automotive Articles - How To Change Spark Plug
The spark plugs in any engine play a big part of how it runs and quite often they break or burn out and need to be changed.
They are a very important part of the engines ignition system and generate a spark (aptly named spark plugs) that then ignites the petrol, which then propels the pistons to move which then further down the track and through the engine makes the engine work!
There are different spark plugs for all engines, most automobiles have different ones for different makes of engines, but almost every engine needs to have their spark plugs changed and by having your car make, and model and chassis number you can usually obtain spark plugs pretty easily.
For a car you will usually obtain more than one, four cylinder engines have four spark plugs, six cylinder engines have six and so on.
So how do you change spark plugs if suddenly one day they don't work any more?
The first step is to obtain your spark plugs from an appropriate car part dealer, and if changing spark plugs on a car, the most important rule is to wait until you're until your engine is cooled down!!
The tools you will need to change your spark plugs are:
3/8" ratchet
Ratchet extensions
Spark plug socket
Appropriate amount of spark plugs (however many your engine needs for changing)
Then you will need to remove your old sparkplugs, the location of spark plugs vary in most cars, they are usually in a row either on the head (big large bit quite noticeably in the center of the engine) or on v6 or v8's they are located on both sides underneath ignition leads or plugs.
Spark Plugs are attached to ignition leads or plugs, quite thick in width and are usually in a row.
If you have trouble locating your spark plugs to change them, refer to your user manual in your vehicle or if not available, search the net for spark plug locations.
Then you will need to pull the leads or plugs off, always remember which order you pulled them off in, it is a good idea to label them with a bit of tape E.G lead one, lead two.
Then using your socket and ratchet begin to loosen the spark plugs, however if you cannot reach the spark plugs, use ratchet extensions to help.
Always turn counter clockwise to loosen the spark plugs, once the spark plugs are removed, check all of them to see if they are damaged and need to be changed.
If they are black in color around the ends, they are damaged and need to be changed however if they are a greenish grayish they are fine and don't need to be changed.
To insert the new spark plugs you will need to place them in the hole where the old spark plugs come out of, with the little hook end facing down, then tighten the spark plugs with the ratchet and socket, but remember not to tighten them too tight, as you or some body else will want to change them one day and might have a hard time undoing them to change them.
Then replace the ignition leads or plugs in the order you removed them and make sure they are secure!
Then drop the hood and see if the car starts perfectly!
Now there is your run down on how to change spark plugs, all my luck to you, and if you cannot change them or need further help, or if your car does not start always consult a qualified mechanic as the problem could be something else other than just the spark plugs.
And remember also that regular maintenance of your car will help it run better, always check to see if you have enough oil and water and get regular tune ups for your vehicle.
And again if you do no know how to do any of the above a qualified mechanic is always available to help.
